Breast Reconstruction

There are several techniques to reconstruct a breast after mastectomy. In preoperative consultations Dr. Fater will work with you to develop a plan to meet your needs and expectations. Reconstruction can be performed immediately, in conjunction with mastectomy, or delayed, after the mastectomy and postoperative care are completed. The timing of the reconstruction is determined prior to the mastectomy. Breast reconstruction is a major procedure requiring general anesthesia and a postoperative hospital stay at Cape Cod Hospital for 2-3 days.

Techniques for breast reconstruction have evolved over the years. Common techniques may involve breast implants, usually silicone with or without a period of tissue expansion to “create” skin. Autologous flaps can also be used from the patient’s body – abdominal or back tissue – to create a breast. Occasionally fat grafting is used to fabricate a breast or to complement another technique.

Mastopexy

(Breast Lift)
Pregnancy, weight gain and aging all contribute to breast ptosis or sagging. A breast lift (mastopexy) can remove the skin excess which is causing the sagging while preserving the breast volume. The scars are inconspicuously placed. Breast lifts are occasionally combined with breast augmentation to tighten the skin envelope while adding volume. These procedures are commonly performed in our private in-office accredited surgical suite under sedation. Patients can return to work in a week.
